Healing
Since day one of Layla’s fight against cancer we have been searching for ways to give her an edge in this battle. We have tried to balance her diet as best as we can given her new food aversions (chemo makes everything taste weird). We have tried to reduce the number of gratuitous medicines she receives to save her liver and kidneys. We have also gone a long way to keep her spirits up because laughter is the best medicine. The problem we’ve had is that when it comes to any health choices not involving a doctor the world becomes a mushy soupy mess of conflicting ideas, snake oil salesmen, zealots, crazies, and downright dangerous concoctions. For all the talk of organic natural healing, the stuff we’ve come across more resembles religion than science. We have scoured the medical journals for research done on Neuroblastoma and other cancers like it, as well as alternative options for treatment.
What we’ve been unable to find is a common sense, science based, peer reviewed, clinically studied regimen of alternative (we’ll call it “supportive”) natural supplements that have a repeatable track record of improving the survival rate of cancer patients. While we pray constantly expecting miracles, we’re not sitting idly by as the walls burn around us. We want solutions for Layla but have been wholly unimpressed with the “supportive” treatment available. We are requesting information on “supportive” options that meet a few specific criteria. If you have information to share we would like to express our gratitude in advance, however please be respectful of the criteria we lay out here and help us by not overloading us with information that falls outside of what we are looking for.
What we are looking for:
- Dietary supplements or vitamins.
- Safe for pediatric use (i.e. labeled with pediatric dosing/serving amounts).
- Preferably something you have used and can personally vouch for.
- Preferably of natural (plant/animal material) origin.
- Preferably with documented clinical studies related to solid tumor cancers.
- Preferably published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
- Preferably produced in the United States.
What we are NOT looking for:
- Replacing Layla’s current treatment plan.
- “Healers”. We believe in God, we pray, and we ask you to pray for Layla and we respectfully leave the faith healing to God.
- Drastic regimens that present any health hazard whatsoever.
- Anything promoted by only one Dr.
- “Procedures” of any sort.
- Illegal in the United States (no, medical Marijuana is not legal in Texas).
- Second hand stories.
- Anything involving a conspiracy theory “Big Pharma doesn’t want you to know about this!”
- Anything sounding even remotely kooky.

Look into Mannatech vitamins. They can’t say that they cure any disease, but as someone that had cancer and is now cancer-free, I highly recommend these vitamins.

Is mibg therapy an option for her.It is used in relapsed and progressive neuroblastoma.I have looked into this because my little 2 1/2 yr old Emily has stage 4 neuroblastoma,and I have researched options in case she needs them.Right now we are smack dab in the middle of transplant,and after reading about little Layla,and the cancer coming back after transplant,it scared me.Mibg therapy uses the same material that is used for the scans,but it is injected and the patient is in a lead room for 2 to 3 days,while the material targets the neuroblastoma.It is very new and there have been some positive results with it.It has been known to eliminate bone lesions and greatly reduce tumor burden.It’s just a thought.I will keep you in my prayers and I hope everything turns out good.Just know that I know what you are dealing with.

Thanks Beth. MIBG is out at the moment because her GFR is so low and we are only 10 weeks post transplant. Depending on how her Kidney function improves Layla might eventually wind up doing MIBG radiation.
I’m using Crypto tablets for stomach issue and hoping that helps my breast cancer cells, even though I had mastectomy. Not sure if they have any supplements for kidney or crypto for kids.

I am not sure this will help as I cannot confirm the effects on cancer patients. However, my son has a rare Mitochondrial disorder and we have found that Co-Enzyme Q10 has been a great asset in reducing the backslides he has had in his life. Recently, I saw that Co-Enzyme Q10 is being researched upon for treatment for cancer as well as relief from cancer treatment side-effects. I wish that I had more…but sometimes starting with improving quality of life is a step in the right direction. My prayers are with you and your family.

All I know is that Suzanne Sommers completely healed herself of cancer with natural remedies. She may have wrote a book, but I’m not sure. My son has molluscum contagiosum which isn’t fatal, but has had us on our knees praying for quite a long time. I turned to natural remedies for it. I wish we would have just started at the dermatologist because they have been more help than anything I found myself. The problem we found with natural stuff is that they “all” claimed to be the miracle cure and I really didn’t feel that any of them were working, but some people use these things whole heartedly and with good results. I pray that you find your answer.

My daughter’s homeopathic pediatrician in Beverly Hills, CA is Dr. Lauren Feder. Visit her site at http://www.drfeder.com. She is not a cancer specialist, but is a well-known homeopath and MD. She has authored two books on the subject of homeopathy for children. It seems most likely that she may know of homeopathic remedies that will increase Layla’s kidney function and ease other symptoms or be able to direct you to another expert within the “supportive” field.

I have never commented or posted anything about Layla’s story, but have followed it very closely. I have a daughter that has a rare genetic disorder. So rare it does not even have a name.
We have spent a lot of time at TCH. There is not a whole lot that they can do for her, so I am seeking other options. I lived in Florida and saw a Dr. there who is world renown for his homeopathic methods. He has cured many, many diseases including terminal cancer. He is a Godly man, so that made me even more comfortable with him. I have known him for several years and plan on taking my daughter, who is 22 months to him. I don’t want to push anything upon you. That is not my intention, but if myself or anyone in my dear family was dying, I would take him directly to this man. I actually called him this evening and talked to him specifically about Layla’s case.

My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years ago, and from her research, she found Tahitian Noni juice. It’s a Tahitian fruit that grows out of volcanic ash, “supports your immune system, delivers superior antioxidants that help rid the body of harmful free radicals, increases energy, is cholesterol-friendly, and allows for greater physical performance levels.” It’s bottled in glass, so no plastic bottle chemicals. It is a bit expensive, but a little goes a long way. If you could add a couple of ounces to Layla’s sippy cup mixed with another juice, have her sip it all day long. My aunt had a mastectomy followed by chemo and radiation, and Praise God, she has been cancer-free since. Have you done any research about drinking food grade hydrogen peroxide? It may sound crazy but there have been many studies done about the benefits of oxygen on the body.
If you research it online, you will find there are many studies specifically about fighting cancer with oxygen. “It has been clinically demonstrated that the spread of cancer is directly proportional to the amount of oxygen around the cancer cells. The more oxygen, the slower the cancer spreads. The less oxygen, the faster the cancer spreads. If cancer cells get enough oxygen, they will die (cancer cells are anaerobic). My husband and I drink it every day. It tastes best if you mix it with Juice. I have found that orange juice makes it almost undetectable. Just make sure you use FOOD GRADE and dilute it. DO NOT use normal stuff you get at the store. Many health food/natural stores sell the food grade hydrogen peroxide.

I have a son who has had brain cancer twice. Here are my suggestions. Go to nutritionalsolutions.net. This lady works with cancer patients. Lots of help on nutrition. This is what she does is cancer patients. Get in touch with her. Also, I know you are not looking for another treatment but if what your doing isn’t working look around. TCH told us there was no good treatment for Gage which was only b/c they are limited to what treatments they offer or know about. It’s a flat out lie. There are treatments. Look up Children’s Memorial in Chicago. They have had success with your daughters cancer. Call the Burzinski clinic. Alternative and very successful. TCH theatened me if I treated Gage there and I walked out. People are scared of what they don’t understand. I am posting to you as a mom who has suffered greatly too. I do know your pain. Cancer sucks so bad. It SUCKS to watch your child suffer but don’t give up. I know you won’t. God has a plan. I know it’s not the one you choose but He is in charge. You do what you can and fight but let God lead you. He may not save your daughter but in the end he does. He saves us all. My only other suggestion is to take your daughter to IHOP (international house of prayer in Kansas City). They have seen great healing’s there and their faith is strong. We took our son to be prayed over at a revival and it changed our lives. Surround yourselves with people who believe. That’s all sorry I went on.

I have read some of the comments here and would like to offer a suggestion.
Have you thought about chiropractic care along with nutritional and supplemental therapy?
I am not a chiropractor, but my children and I try to go regularly.
According to the chiropractors that I’ve been to, when your spine is out of alignment, it is pressing on the nerves that come out of your spinal cord. When these nerves are being compressed, the organ/bodily function (i.e. immune system) is not functioning properly.
If Layla’s bones are able to handle chiropractice adjustments, and a good chiro would tell you so before he even touched her, I would add that to the regimen.
I also believe that God can heal Layla. I will continue to pray for her.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I claim that Layla Grace will be healed from all cancer, that all the cells in her body will line up according to Gods word. She will be healed here on earth and she will be able to spread the good news of Gods love and grace. Amen
I have nothing specific to add, just wanted to let you know about Dr. Mercola. He has a website. If you haven’t heard of him, check out his site. He has tons of alternative therapy ideas for just about everything. I am an RN who knows from experience that alternative medicine can be very powerful. Our prayers are with you. My dad was diagnosed with renal cancer back in 2000. He went through multiple surgeries(kidney removal, brain surgerys) removing the cancer because Chemo does nothing to renal cancer. So all we could do was take it out. It finally caught up to him in late 2002 and he was given “months” to live. We started “supportive” medicine in Jan 2003. This consisted of a substance called Cancell that was supposed to strenghten his immune system, along with other some other supplements. His daily doses were the Cancell, vitamin B17, apricot seeds, and magnesium. He was able to walk me down the isle in Aug 2003, and past away Nov. 25, 2004- 2 1/2 years after his months to live diagnosis.

We heard of a nutritional approach to cancer called Gerson Therapy watching a documentary sometime ago. It has been studied since the 1920′s and apparently has a good success rate as an alternative cancer treatment. There are treatment centers in many places, but I believe they will give you the nutritional information and some advice over the phone. I believe it is essentially a nutritional approach.

I went through all this with my Max. We had a naturopath, several RDs, plus lots of parent-driven research available. We tracked everything. Your Onc must be on board with your plan – this has to be a team effort – or it will be difficult to achieve durable results and you will have wasted time/money. You don’t state any of your goals in using CAM therapies so I won’t try to provide any solutions here. But think of what your goals are – are you trying to solve specific health issues (ie, GI issues, appetite stimulation, neutropenia, muscle wasting, etc), or are you trying to optimize general overall health, or are you looking for complementary therapies that may have an anti-tumor effect? All very different goals requiring different tactics requiring different expert advisors (if you try to do this alone… well, I wouldn’t). Email me if you have ?’s.

And I know if you had the ability to you would flip it onto yourself just so your baby girl wouldn’t have to… but remember… God obviously thinks you’re a very special and important person to have blessed you with your beautiful Layla and this ordeal. Not to mention what a gift from God she is to be used by Him for his own purpose unbeknownst to us. I know these are just words but I pray for you all the time…
I learned a few things while I was fighting breast cancer last year. I was 6 weeks post partum and went for my full physical and nothing. Not 8 days later, I was a smoothing a shirt over my body that I felt the lump. From no lumps to a big one in 8 days. It was stage 2 grade 3. Freaked me out. I had a 6 week old and an 18 month old. I went thru surgeries and chemo and homeopaths to help me rid this disease. I’m going on one over 1 year as a survivor and I believe prayers helped me.
I don’t know if you have a Crossroads Ministry in the states but they have prayer chains that will pray for you and your daughter.
I know you are probably sick of giving Layla all the meds… but these could help her feel better….
1. I went to a homeopath and she gave me the Unda compounds to take while going thru chemo.. they are tiny bottle where you only take a few drops with water 3 times a day and they help your kidneys and liver flush out the junk that dies in your body when chemo is doing its job. It does NOT counter act the chemo.. it just helps the body flush everything out so it doesn’t rot inside the body and there by causing more problems.
a. Also.. she put me on an anti inflammatory diet… no sugar because they feed cancer cells, no milk products either.. basically a tonne of fruits and veggies and organic meats…maybe cutting down a bit will be better than nothing.. but natural sugars like stevia was permitted… I admit that I have reverted back to eating all of it.. but organic milks and meats and moderation for my sweet treats.
2. VITAMIN D – MOST IMPORTANT ONE IN MY BOOKS. I am not sure if you are aware of this wonder vitamin but it basically re directs blood flow from the tumours. The cancer cells do not get fed by Layla’s precious blood supply and causes the tumours to start shrink because it is not being fed that way. I myself – 33yrs—take 2000 IUs a day.. two little pills and I give my little girls 800 IU’s in a droplet formula… of all the research I did they only thing that they said was going beyond 20000 UI’s could be harmful…
3. Zinc pills – I know when I was going thru chemo food tasted gross in my mouth… such a yucky taste I had that nothing appealed to me… but the zinc helped balance the flavours out.. not to mention but boost my immune system as well… and I could start to eat normal foods again and get a good appetite back… maybe even a zinc drop would help instead of an actual pill…
4. East Indian Foods – they have turmeric which fights the cancerous cells… it comes in a pill form called curcumin…
5. Pomegranate juices – so high in anti oxidants and also attacks cancer cells…
6. A book I read called the Anti-Cancer Diet and You by Dr David Servan-Schreiber. The author had brain cancer and was given a dismal diagnosis… he survived and put all his remedies in this book. It has a little pullout leaflet that shows you the foods that fight cancer cells. He is a doctor so he uses a lot of big words but that leaflet is great… very simple and shows you right off the bat the GOOD foods to kick cancers butt.
Of course I am being very presumptuous in all my suggestions.. you have dealt with this a very long time and probably have tried many things.. but I didn’t want to not say anything for fear there may be something new you could try…

I am just getting caught up on Sweet Layla. My family lives next door to your friend Sherry B. I have faith the God will heal Layla! We will add your family to our prayers. We have three kids with low immune systems, asthma and allergies. My husband has handicapping pain. I understand that you are not in our immediate area, but this is all I know to recommend. My mother worked with him for a time to help him get his story down in writing. He holds the only US patent for a diet, a diet which he has found to heal cancer. I’m not sure if you have ever heard of MonaVie but it is a wonderful Nutrional beverage full of antioxidants, with the Acai berry being the crown jewel. MonaVie does not claim to cure cancer but I have met quite a few people who’ve had success with it, Brigg Hart – one of the owners, being one of them. The Acai Berry is like 100 x’s more powerful than blueberries and cranberries and is known as a “superfood”. I’m not saying that it WILL cure…I’m just saying that it’s worth a try. I know someone personally who had a tumor disappear while drinking this. It’s pretty pricey but it’s deifnitely worth a shot to me at this point. My daughter has been undergoing treatment for stage IV high risk neuroblastoma N-myc since Aug 09. She is 16 months old now.
She has been on high dose chemo and has refused pretty much all food for the last 5 months except the odd day here and there so she has a NG tube.
I believe that nutrition is the window to health. I was studying to be a dietitian before this happened. We ate healthy before she was even forming in my stomach but sadly this cancer strikes for no reason on unsuspecting families.
Instead of using the standard “pediasure” that everyone uses here I breastfeed and make pureed green babyfood at home using organic mostly vegetarian foods and then run a feeding pump at night with organic soy formula and carrot juice (1ml carrot juice for every 10ml formula). I also take a drug to increase my breastmilk beyond normal amounts (domperidone) so that I can pump and add that to the feeds at night.
I had the dietitain at the hospital make sure she was getting a balanced amount of nutrients/calories.
2 sample liquid diet meals would look like this:
1) romaine (calcium + phytonutrients)
avocado (fat)
chick peas (protein)
garlic (immune booster)
tumeric (antiox)
collard greens (cooked) (calcium + phytonutrients)
homemade salt free soup stock (for liquid + minerals)
2) coconut milk (for liquid/fat)
watercress (clensing + phytonutrients)
boiled egg (protein)
winter squash (phytonutrients + antiox)
romaine (calcium + phytonutrients)
cayenne (antioxidants and supposedly can control pain)
I never use dairy in the mix although she eats a little bit of organic yogourt orally. I make about 12 different varieties of this liquid diet.
I give her 2 oz of this 3-5X a day (try to use a different mix for variety as much as possible) but only after I have given her a good chance to first eat food “normally”. I also give her 3ml of an oil supplement (UDOS Choice DHA) 2X day and vit D once a day.
Foods that she will eat a few X per week are hummus (licked off crackers or carrots), avocado, smooth soup, yogourt, and breastmilk (12+X day).
She will not eat anything with chunks or texture anymore but I hope she will get over it after she is done treatment so try not to bother her about it now because I know her tastes are constantly changing due to the chemo and I don’t want to create more of an adversion than she already has.
I feel that this has helped her greatly. She has only had one infection during her treatment so far (at inseflon site) and is always full of energy and spunk and happiness even when she is feeling terrible. There have only been 1/2 dozen days where she has not been up and running around the hospital and 3 of those were due to surgery to remove the tumor in january.
She is going in for a tandem transplant in march so I have to make sure everything is extra clean and sterile when making the food. I make it all at once then freeze it in 2 oz pedialite bottles labeled with the date and variety so that I only have to make food like that about once every 2 months.
I do not give her any “healthfood cancer cures” and I do not believe that the food is getting rid of the cancer but I do believe that the good nutrition that she is getting is helping her to remain happy and strong throughout her treatment. She has actually gone from 13lb at diagnosis to 18lb now even with chemo amazing all the doctors who told me that they would be happy if she stayed at that size so long as she didn’t lose weight.

In searching the internet for natural cancer remedies earlier, I saw a blog that mentioned that orange juice has a property (liminoids) in it that has been shown to stop neuroblastoma tumors from growing – and even kills neuroblastoma cells – ? I just found an article about a study done at Texas A&M too – ? It was from 2004, so probably it never materialized – ? I am sure you have done a lot of research and if something that sounds so natural & simple were a viable option, you’ve probably already looked into it. My father is an engineer and for all my life he’s always worked on medical equipment. He currently is working with a company called Accuray (he’s been there for 13 years) and they have a device that pin points tumors with radiation. Along with it there is chemotherapy but in very low doses. They have a facebook and information is available through the website I posted earlier.
I feel like many people (including doctors) don’t know about this treatment. If I chose not to inform you of this I don’t think I could sleep very well at night. Whether or not you chose to look into this treatment or if Layla can really benefit from it, maybe this info can help other people.

I have a trusted christian friend who uses this with her husband congenital genetic handicap and she backs this stuff 100%. I wish i could say that I’ve read all the research articles, but with a toddler of my own, I admittedly have not. Still, it seems to be totally vitamin and nutrient based and there is several products that seem (from a medical standpoint,…I am an RN,…quite valid)…. One of them is a cell hydrator. The others are packed with vitamins. I’d be glad to put you into touch with my friend who is now selling theproduct. She is a solid reformed presbyterian christian and does not sell to sell…she just sells to get the discount for her hubby’s needs of the products(financially) and to promote it because she has seen amazing things with it.

I am speechless over Layla’s condition. My neighbor’s 4 year daughter had the same cancer and was treated at CHOPS and 3 weeks ago my 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia. I don’t know if you have researched breast milk and cancer treatment, as someone suggested in another post, but I was curious, so I just looked up some information on it, and it really does seem to have healing properties. I have an entire deep freeze of frozen breast milk (I am currently nursing my 9 month old son and am very blessed to have a HUGE supply), and have WAY more in the deep freeze than what he is going to need, so I would love to donate some for Layla if this is something you have researched and believe may help her. My heart goes out to Layla, and you and your family.
